Text-Set-Go-Round

During labs 1 - 8, you learned about a number of topics and responded to many questions posed by the instructor. No doubt you also have many questions of your own as well, some of which may have been answered by now but others which are still "stewing." This is the first of a series of summative labs in which you take ownership of the material and pursue your own questions. For example, why must living things eat other living things?

Exercise 1

1. The class members will divide themselves into four approximately equal groups based upon personal interests. We recommend that each group study one of the following four topics, although these may be modified with the approval of the instructor:

  • Food Groups & Organic Molecules
  • Diffusion & Osmosis in the Human Body
  • The Particulate Nature of Matter
  • Water, Its Characteristics & Processes
2. Each member of the group will obtain three to five library books on this topic suitable for students in grades 4 - 12. The books may be fiction or factual. We want a wide assortment. This should give each group 24 - 40 books on the topic.
3. Group members will generate a list of questions they have about the topic. They will then peruse these books and read those of particular interest, seeking answers to some of the questions that have been posed. They will summarize the questions and answers in an interesting series of posters to be presented to the class.
